| BMW has just released their new 5 Series
just in time to battle the new M from Infiniti next year. Details are
scarce for now but the designs are finalized. |
| 2011 BMW 5 Series |
vs |
2011
Infiniti M |

The 5 Series already looks familiar due to the strong (read:
identical) resemblance to the
BMW 7 Series. It looks good but not exactly what we expected
for the new decade. It looks better than the 7 Series though
with smaller features like the grille and shorter front end. |
|

The new M brings a whole new look to the table. It's curvaceous
but goes a little too far. Less is more when it comes to
mid-luxury vehicles. The grille may be the key feature that
throws off the look as it is too large to match the front. The
fenders would be better if the curves were taken down a couple
notches. |

 |
| The M has a longer sloping rear
that goes further into the trunk. Interestingly, the M has an
A-, B-, C- and a D-pillar while the 5 Series only has three.
The M has an extra side window behind the door while the 3
Series integrates it into the door. The 5 Series has a
straighter profile and is more rigid than the fluid M. The
swoopy side profile of the M looks disproportioned in some areas
while the 5 Series' profile looks exactly like the 7 Series and
3 Series. |

|
 |
| Oddly enough, the 5 Series tail
lights actually resemble the
first generation Infiniti G35 while
everything else looks like its bigger brother. The M's curves
continue all the way to the back but the sheet metal doesn't
look as taut as the BMW. |

 |
| Both interiors are designed well.
BMW still has trouble designing buttons for the 21st century but
the rest of the layout is very clean and faultless. The M looks
a bit more modern but the center console bulges out. It's better
for ergonomics but doesn't look as good as the BMW. |
